Archeology Summer Course on Conservation and Restoration organized by the Cultural Institute
The Cultural Institute of the Macao S.A.R. Government has sought to highlight the importance of conservation works and heritage restoration. In doing so, the Museum of Macao organized an archeology summer course on conservation and restoration between 30th June and 28th August 2003. The aim of this course was to provide the younger generation in Macao with an instructive pastime for their summer holidays.
For the third consecutive year, the Cultural Institute / Museum of Macao organized this course in Cantonese, with a total of 22 sessions. The main focus of the course was on archeology, conservation and restoration as well as visits to heritage sites, like the Mount Fortress, St. Paul’s Ruins, Museum of Sacred Art & Crypt, St. Dominic’s Church, the Holy House of Mercy of Macao, the Traditional Pawnshop and St. Joseph’s Church. The students had the opportunity to carry out practical work in restoring ceramic pieces, visit Zhuhai, in particular the Zhuhai Museum, archeological excavations and Bronze Age Wall carvings. As such, the Cultural Institute’s primary goal was to motivate Macao’s youth as to the importance of conservation and heritage restoration and to develop their knowledge within these subjects.
The course was divided into four classes: one each for students of Choi Kou School, Mateus Ricci College and Cham Son School, and the fourth, with 16 vacancies for other youngsters between 16 and 25 years old. This last course took place from the 30th June to 29th July, Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m..
