Exhibition of Macao Religious Figure Carving Opens at
Macao Museum
A Step Forward in Intangible Cultural Heritage
Protection
Ingenious Woodwork - Macao Religious Figure Carving,
an exhibition organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau
of the Macao S.A.R. Government and the Macao Museum,
will have its opening ceremony in the Macao Museum at
6:00 p.m. on Thursday, 4th December 2008. The exhibition
will be open to the public from 5th December 2008 to 5th
April 2009. It is hoped that this exhibition wil l
disseminate the message of Intangible Cultural Heritage
protection to as wide an audience as possible.
Religious figure carving is a time-honoured art in
Macao. In the 1920s and 1930s, it reached its zenith as
fishing became a pillar industry in Macao's economy and
religious figures became both popular and mandatory for
worship and prayer. The hundred-year-old traditional
handicraft has passed through various stages of
development although it has been in decline for some
time. Fortunately, it has survived the impact of
modernisation. These days, this fine wood carving art is
undergoing substantial development through continual
innovation.
In order to protect this valuable traditional
handicraft, the Museum established a task force to
survey the status of religious figure carving in Macao.
The task force drafted, compiled and submitted the
application for its listing as an intangible cultural
heritage in 2007, which was, on completion of
verification, inscribed on the National Intangible
Cultural Heritage List by the State Council on 14th June
2008.
The exhibition displays some 85 exhibits, including
carved figures from Buddhist, Taoist and Chinese folk
beliefs. Carving tools, wood samples and historical data
are also featured to enable a better understanding of
the religious beliefs of the fishermen and people of
Macao. The foregoing exhibits were all made in Macao.
Some reside in the Macao Museum while others loaned by
the Tai Cheong Wood Engraving Co., the Lin Fong Temple
Charity Management and Fishermen’s Mutual Help
Association of Macao.
In addition to the exhibition, an education zone has
been set up for local residents and visitors to be
better informed about the historical features of
religious figures; and a workshop will be conducted by
Mr. Tsang Tak Hang, an expert on the religious figures
of Macao, in the lecture hall of the Macao Museum from
3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on 7th December, to which
citizens are welcome. Admission tickets to the workshop
are limited and as such will be available on a
first-come-first-served basis. To register, interested
parties should call Miss Lee on (853) 8394-1231 during
office hours or visit the website of the Cultural
Affairs Bureau at www.icm.gov.mo or the website of the
Macao Museum at www.macaumuseum.gov.mo.

Exhibition “Auspicious Blessings -- Chinese New Year
Prints from Yangliuqing” Printing Workshops Available
for the Public
Jointly organized by the
Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR Government, the
People’s Government of Xiqing District of Tianjin, the
Chinese Academy of Arts and the Macao Museum, an
exhibition entitled “Auspicious
Blessings -- Chinese New Year Prints from Yangliuqing”
will be presented to the public on the 3rd
floor of the Macao Museum between 20 January and 25
March, aiming at welcoming the Chinese New Year and
increasing the Macao residents and visitors’ awareness
of the Chinese intangible cultural heritage and its
protection by the public.
Named after the town located
in western suburb of Tianjin, the Yangliuqing New Year
prints, nianhua (woodblock prints for Chinese New
Year), is the most representative folk art form among
the others in China. With its unique artistic features
and decorative beauty, diverse contents as well as
propitious leitmotivs, pleasing both reined and popular
tastes, the Yangliuqing nianhua, amid the other
New Year prints, has been greatly appreciated by
large numbers of people and become the most celebrated
and artistic item for greeting the Chinese New Year. For
that reason, it was listed by the State Council of China
as one of the first national intangible cultural
heritages in May 2006.
Originated in the reign of
Chongzhen Emperor (1628-1644) of the Ming dynasty and
marked its height during the reign of Qianlong Emperor
(1736-1795) of the Qing dynasty, the Yangliuqing
nianhua has a history over three hundred years. It
came to decline and was nearly brought to its brink of
extinction during the War of Resistance Against Japanese
Aggression (1937-1945). After the founding of the new
China, especially ever since the launch of the open door
policy, this traditional Chinese art, the Yangliuqing
nianhua, has regained a new life.
The process of producing
Yanliuqing nianhua is relatively complicated. A
preliminary design is copied to a woodblock and engraved
until the lined pattern is ready on the woodblock.
Prints are taken from the woodblock monochromatically,
or combining the technique of chromatography and
followed by hand-coloured painting. The whole
production process requires strict rigour in every part
of the work, thus masterful techniques are demanded.
The present exhibition
of Yangliuqing nianhua aims at further promoting
and popularizing national folk art, speeding up cultural
exchanges, enhancing Macao people and visitors’
recognition and protection of tangible and intangible
cultural heritage. Sixty-four prints with woodblocks
and tools from Yangliuqing will be displayed in the
exhibition, interpreting the subjects from door gods,
beauties and chubby children, Chinese opera characters
to auspicious emblems and historical tales, etc.
A series of activities and
printing workshops will be held during the exhibition
period to further promote the understanding of the
nianhua’s art. They are scheduled as follow:
The Teachers’ Sessions:
On Sunday, 21 January, 10am to 12pm & 2:30pm to 4:30pm,
demonstrations of producing nianhua by the
masters from Yangliuqing. Discussions with teachers will
be followed after the demonstrations.
School Workshops:
From 7 February, on every Wednesday afternoon, 3pm to
4pm & 4pm to 5pm; and on every Saturday morning, 10am to
11am & 11am to 12pm, printing workshops of “Let’s Paint
& Colour” for students.
Family Workshops:
Sundays of 28 January, 4 and 11 February, 10am to 12pm,
“Way to Yangliuqing nianhua” workshops for
families.
Guided Tours:
Guided tours are offered to schools and community groups
by prior appointments.
The numbers of participants to the workshops are
limited. Starting from today, earlier register is
necessary on the basis of first come, first served. For
further information, please call: 28357911. |

New Display from the Museum Collection at Re-opening
We have reopened to the public since Tuesday, 28th
November 2006 after the annual maintenance work.
The new display on the third floor of the Museum shows
some master copies of ‘Leung Wing Hing Medicine’
advertisement and artworks on Macao of the 17th and 19th
centuries’ western artists. This is a part of our
museum’s acquisitions during the recent years.
‘Leung Wing Hing’ established during the reign of
Guangxu (1875-1908), with the head-office located at Rua
de Cinco de Outubro and the branch office and workshop
at Rua das Lorchas and Rua de S. Paulo in Macao, and
other branches in Hongkong and Guangzhou, was a renowned
producer and exporter of Chinese herbal medicine and
incense sticks. It was one of the influential
enterprises in Macao in the early 20th century. The
master copies of ‘Leung Wing Hing Medicine’
advertisement are charcoal drawings showing high-quality
design with neat and delicate pattern, graceful
calligraphy and impressive portraits. These drawings are
highly valuable pieces, not only for the public
appreciation but for the reference on the development of
the industries in Macao as well.
The other new exhibits are prints and maps created by
Dutch, German and Italian artists and cartographers
during the 17th and 19th centuries. Different techniques
including copper engraving, lithography and watercolour
were employed to depict the geographic and early phases
of Macao.
We hope that the audience will increase the
understanding of the Macao history and know about the
museum’s recent acquisitions after visiting our new
exhibition.
