The Cultural Institute/ Museum of Macao in collaboration with the National Museum of Chinese Modern History, will be presenting an exhibition focusing on the theme “The Flag, The Emblem and the National Anthem of the People’s
Re public of China”, which will be open to the public from the 13th December until the 11th April 2003. The
inauguration ceremony will take place on the 12th December, at 15:00, in the Museum of Macao.
The exhibition will comprise of various important documents, manuscripts and objects related with the history of the establishment of the People’s Republic of China. For example the microphone used by
Chairman Mao Zedong, in Tiananmen to proclaim the founding of the PRC and his inscription on the Monument of the People’s Heroes
“Eternal Glory to the People’s Heroes”.
Important objects from Modern History, like the podium with the National Emblem used in the Macao Handover Ceremony, as well as the speech given during the same ceremony by His Excellency the President of the People’s Republic of China, Jiang Zemin, the speech given by His Excellency the Prime Minister of the State Council, Zhu Rongji at the ceremony of the establishment of the Special Administrative Region of Macao, its Government and its respective Programs.
The Exhib ition is divided into three parts:
“Historical Background”- comprises of the period before the founding of Modern China, such as the publication by the Preparatory Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, of the “Notice concerning the competition of the conception of the Flag, Emblem, Lyrics and Music of the National Anthem”. In September of 1949, at the 1st Plenary Meeting of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, the red flag with five stars as the National Flag and the March of the
Volunte ers as the National Anthem was unanimously adopted. In June of 1950, at the 8th Meeting of the Central People’s Government the design of the National Emblem was approved.

“Symbols of the Republic”- the Constitution of the PRC stipulates that the National Flag, the National Emblem and the National Anthem represent and symbolize the People’s Republic of China. To safeguard the dignity of such
national symbols, to reinforce the feeling of patriotism, the 14th Meeting of the Standing Committee of the Seventh People’s Congress, carried out on the 28th June 1990, adopted the Law of the National Flag of the People’s Republic of China, which controls the hoisting and place, time and way in which the National Flag is used. On the 2nd March of 1991, at the 18th Meeting of the Standing Committee of the Seventh People’s Congress, the Law of the Emblem of the People’s Republic of China, stipulating the use of the National Emblem and its design was approved. To guarantee the solemnity of the National Anthem, which represents the dignity of the Nation, on the 1st August of 1984, The Central Promotion Department of the Chinese Communist Party promulgated the Provisionary methods concerning how the National Anthem of the People’s Republic of China is played and sung, foreseeing precisely in which situations it should be played and sung.
“Patriotism in our Hearts” transmits the love of the National Flag, the respect for the National Emblem and the National Anthem as the supremest love of the sons of the Chinese Nation for its spirit of patriotism, its fight for dignity, honor, prosperity and growth. Since a century ago, the Chinese people have supported themselves, fighting for prosperity, progressing in time, having achieved success in the revolution and construction and guaranteed national sovereignty and dignity. The Chinese, residents in the country or abroad, are patriotic, fighting enthusiastically to honor the National Flag, Emblem and National Anthem, promoting the overall cause of development with all Nations of the world.
There will also be on display a large map of the PRC, in the Discovery Room, so that the visitors can obtain more information regarding the
Provin ces of China, Municipalities and Special Administrative Regions. The Museum of Macao will also sell an educational brochure at a discount price to the students who visit the exhibition entitled,
“Learn ing about the National Flag, Emblem and Anthem of the People’s Republic of China. It will contain attractive
illust rations arranged in a simple way in order to gain a better understanding of the meaning of
the National Flag, Emblem and National Anthem of the PRC.
The Exhibition will be open to the public every day, except Mondays, from 10:00 until 18:00, at the Museum of Macao. We welcome everyone.
