As
an actress and Cantonese Opera artiste, Fong Yim
Fun was cherished by the people of Hong Kong. Known
as the “Queen of Female Principals” she contributed
significantly to the development and innovation
of Cantonese Opera and the films in which she features
are indelibly engraved in the hearts of her audiences.
During the 1950’s, Fong Yim Fun performed several
times in Macao where she was always highly commended.
After leaving the world of cinema, she continued
to encourage others through charity services dedicated
to those in need. She is a woman of strong conviction
and feeling and is a role model for all other women.
During the meeting of Greater Pearl River Delta Cultural
Summit 2002, a decision was taken to revitalize the tradition
of Cantonese Opera by planning an application to UNESCO
(United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization) for recognition as a Masterpiece of the
Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. This exhibition
represents the effective measures taken by the Cultural
Institute, with the aim of promoting the essence of this
art as well as evoking its great protagonists.
This exhibition is made possible thanks to generous donations
by the actress herself to the Hong Kong Heritage Museum,
with the aim of sharing with the public items from her
wardrobe, collection of librettos, photographs, posters
and programs. The other organizations that contributed
significantly to making this exhibition possible include
the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the Hong
Kong Heritage Museum, the Hong Kong Film Archive, the
Cinema Company “Eng Kin Film Co. Ltd.” and the Kwan Fong
Charitable Foundation, to all of whom I would like to
express my sincerest thanks.
Heidi Ho, President of the Cultural Institute of
the Macao S.A.R. Government
