One of the functions of the Macao Museum is to conduct research. Hence, the Macao Museum conducts thematic studies on history, people’s livelihood and the industries of Macao, utilising existing literature, factual evidence and historical cultural relics. Some of the research achievements of the Macao Museum have been used for special and permanent exhibitions and publications.

Conservation, a primary function of museums, is a way of preserving invaluable and unique cultural property. It basically consists of preventive and interventional conservation. Preventive conservation seeks to retain the physical condition of cultural property through environmental controls and scientific treatment so that they can be well preserved in the long term; interventional conservation, utilising the most suitable materials and approaches, seeks to restore the historical appearance of the cultural relics to a certain degree when necessary. The Macao Museum is currently addressing the restoration of a series of cultural relics, including porcelain pieces, Chinese calligraphy, Western paper products, metals, wood-ware, and ancient literature.
