Dragon dance has a long history in China. There are various types of dragons. Among the many kinds there are, just to name a few, the crepe dragon from Xinhui, the anthrodragon from Zhanjiang, the pole dragon from Meiyuan, the black scaly dragon from Taipo and the drunken dragon from Macao. The drunken dragon dance in Macao earned its fame nationwide from the dancers’ inebriated moves. It stands out as a unique performance from the dragon dances of other regions. The drunken dragon dance does not only function as an entertainment element during sacrificial ceremonies; it also serves as a token of unity for members of the Macao Fish Trade General Association. The drunken dragon has become a symbol of patriotism, a sacred dragon that brings vibrancy and vitality to Macao.
The Macao SAR Government submitted its application to Beijing in September 2009 for the inclusion of the Drunken Dragon Festival in the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List. After a month’s public consultation and evaluation by national experts, this item was officially catalogued in the third list on 23rd May, 2011.
