Macao is the first chinese city into which French photography was introduced.The local staging of the exhibition “A Journey through Light and Shadow –The Invention of Photography and the Earliest Photographs of Macao, China”is therefore of special significance.The two-part exhibition first introduces the origin of photography, in which topics such as the birth of photography and Daguerreotype photography are covered. In showcasing the world’s first camera obscura, those from different eras, and old images capturing important moments, the exhibition opens a gateway to the understanding of remarkable achievements in photographic technology and the apparatus manufactured by major inventors from different eras. The second part of the exhibition details how the French introduced their photography into China via Macao and the earliest photographs taken here in China, which in turn were deemed to be the catalyst for Chinese photography.
