Macao is a city where diverse cultures coexist harmoniously. It features Southern European and Portuguese architecture and culture alongside its deep-rooted legacy of Chinese historical buildings and culture. In fact, the sheer depth of Chinese culture in Macao — which is steeped in history — is a testament to the city’s rich heritage. Beyond their historical and cultural value, these sites also serve as venues for intangible cultural heritage activities. Most of these activities have become integrated into the daily lives of Macao’s residents.
Many of Macao’s historical buildings are closely connected to modern Chinese cultural and patriotic figures. Among these buildings is the famous Mandarin’s House, where thinker and writer Zheng Guanying completed his world-renowned work, ‘Words of Warning in Times of Prosperity’. This influential tome inspired several generations of great leaders. Another building in Macao which has key cultural significance is General Ye Ting’s Former Residence. The much-lauded patriot and military leader is celebrated along with his heroic deeds within the walls of his well-preserved former home. Buildings such as Kiang Wu Hospital, Tung Sin Tong Charitable Society and Kun Iam Tong are also significant as they each bear witness to the unity and aid provided by various sectors of the city during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. These buildings serve as reminders that some of Macao’s residents once rushed to the front lines to defend the motherland while others set about caring for those in need at home. All of these buildings weave a compelling narrative of shared roots and solidarity.
In 2024, to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Macao Special Administrative Region, the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao Special Administrative Region Government holds an exhibition titled Shared Roots and Interconnected Branches: The Importance of National Culture and Sentiment within the Heart of Macao’s Historical Buildings. Across more than 100 fascinating displays — each carefully selected for its historical and cultural significance — this exhibition aims to convey to the public Macao’s enduring and unwavering sentiments of love and pride for the nation.

The four dynasties of Zhou, Qin, Han, and Tang in the long history of ancient China not only created enormous material wealth, but also witnessed spectacular cultural prosperity. As glorious pinnacles of China’s cultural attainments, these four epochs contributed greatly to the development of human civilisation in general, and their economic, political, cultural, and social legacies can still be felt in China today.
