For the People Exhibition to Open in Macao Museum Tomorrow

The opening ceremony of the exhibition For the People – Sun Yat Sen and Macao is slated to open at 5:00pm on Friday 23rd September at the Macao Museum, which showcases precious cultural relics housed in various museums and collected by individuals, unveiling the close connection between Dr. Sun Yat Sen and Macao.

Organised by the Macao Museum under the Cultural Affairs Bureau, and with the full support of various museums and individual collectors from Macao, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Taipei and Hong Kong, the Macao Museum will showcase nearly 200 precious original cultural artefacts in the 3rd Floor Exhibition Gallery. The works on display contain much that is new, with some pieces never having been displayed in Macao and hence are well worth savouring. To better prepare for the opening, the Macao Museum will suspend ticket sales from 3:00pm on the day of opening, whilst the Mount Fortress Garden will remain open in the afternoon. The exhibition will open to the public from 24th September to 11th December.

The Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macao S.A.R. Cheong U, in the company of the Deputy Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Macao S.A.R. Mao Siwei, Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao S.A.R. Liu Weining, President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau Ung Vai Meng, granddaughter of Dr. Sun Yat Sen, Sun Sui-fong, Committee Member of the Cultural Consultative Committee Lei Pang Chu and Director of Macao Museum Chan Ieng Hin.

Given its special political environment, Macao contributed in a unique manner to the Xinhai Revolution, which marks its centenary anniversary this year. This city, which once served as a shelter for the revolutionaries, has close ties with Dr. Sun Yat Sen. With Xinhai Revolution as the historical background, the exhibition is divided into four themes; namely ‘Macao, a port for setting sail to a great life’, ‘Macao, a cradle for nurturing revolution’, ‘Macao, a warm place to entrust to family love’, and ‘Macao, a small city bound closely with the pioneer’.

Exhibits will be displayed by means of relic displays and multi-media devices including images and videos. Via this exhibition, the Organiser hopes to introduce the role Macao played during the Revolution in the form of images and writings, thereby enabling exhibition-goers to better understand the historical significance of the Revolution and Macao’s contribution to the Revolution. The exhibition also seeks to introduce the strong, tight roots Dr. Sun Yat Sen and his family established with Macao, thereby expressing the eternal reminiscences that Macao people have of Dr. Sun Yat Sen.

To solemnly commemorate the centenary of the Xinhai Revolution, the Cultural Affairs Bureau and various departments under its auspices have co-operated to hold a series of activities. To complement the aforementioned theme, the Macao Historical Archives will host ‘Allegiance of Revolutionaries: Seminar commemorating the 100th anniversary of the 1911 Revolution’ on 24th September from 9:30am to 5:30pm at the Macao Museum Auditorium.

In addition, the Studies, Research and Publications Division of the Bureau will organise two seminars – ‘The Macanese Community and the 1911 Revolution’ by Dr. Li Changsen on 29th October and ‘Newspaper Industry in Macao around the 1911 Revolution’ by Dr. Lam Iok Fong on 12th November. Both seminars will run from 3:00pm to 5:00pm in the same auditorium, and all Macao residents are welcome to register for the two seminars.
