Macao is one of the regions with the earliest postal services in the Greater China. Maritime postal services were provided in early times to provide letter delivery services between Macao and other parts of the world by sea, which marked the beginning of postal services in Macao.
In 1884, the official Post Office of Macao was established and the first of Macao’s stamps – the Macao Crown Stamp – was issued. The official Post Office initially located at the junction between Rua de Santa Clara and Rua do Campo and later moved to a European villa where the Metropole Hotel is standing today in Avenida da Praia Grande. The General Post Office Building on Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro was inaugurated in 1929, centralising and providing postal, telegraph and telephone services at that time.
