Traditional Chinese Bakery

Traditional Chinese bakery in Macao have been gradually replaced by western pastry shops or bakeries, which emerged and became popular at a later time. Currently, only several Traditional Chinese bakery are still in operation in the city. In addition to being a daily food item, traditional Chinese baked goods also play an important role in the lives of the people of Macao. For instance, fried sesame balls (jian dui) and deep-fried sweet dumplings (yau gok) are a common combination in religious rituals and served to guests during Chinese New Year; mooncakes, which have now developed into a multiple of varieties, can be enjoyed by oneself or given as presents to friends or relatives during the Mid-autumn Festival; Chinese bridal cakes still retain a fairly important place in traditional wedding rituals nowadays.

 

In modern times, these traditional Chinese bakery with strong local characteristics strive to maintain their traditional baking techniques while seeking innovations in product packaging and publicity, injecting vitality into this traditional sector and their products.
