These two bells were made in the 18th century for the bell tower of the “Macao Jesuit College of Madre de Deus” (or St. Paul’s Church).
The smaller one was forged in 1714, and a line is inscribed in the middle: “ANTo DE SEQRa DE NRa SENDO CAPao GERAL DESTA CIDe O MANDOV FVNDIR EM 2 DE MAYO DE 1714 ANNOS”.
There are also a line on the upper part of the larger one: “SONET VOX TVA IN AVRIBVS MEIS” and a line to note its location on the rim: “MACAO COLLo DA MADRE DE DEOS DA COMPa DE IESVS ANNO DE 1736”. In the centre the emblem of the Society of Jesus -IHS- is engraved within a radiant sun.
The Ruin of St. Paul’s is the remnant façade of the Church of Madre de Deus. It is one of Macao’s landmarks and is listed as part of the Historic Centre of Macau, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
