The Macao Museum was established in 1998. We embrace its 20th anniversary this year. For a long time, we have been offering a platform to exhibit the unique cultural encounter between East and West and have organized many large-scaled exhibitions, including “From Versailles to the Forbidden City –– Engravings from the Louvre Collection”, “A Journey through Light and Shadow –– The Invention of Photography and the Earliest Photographs of Macao, China”, “The Soaring Dance –– Festival of the Drunken Dragon in Macao”, as well as “Journey to the Ends of the World –– Michele Ruggieri and Jesuits in China”, “Maritime Porcelain Road –– Relics from Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Museums”, “Collotype · Recurrence –– Spatial Convergence of John Thomson and Wong Ho Sang”, and the recent “Treasure from the Deep Sea –– Exhibition of Underwater Archaeological Relics of the Nanhai No. 1” which commenced on April 18th this year, the date of our 20th anniversary. These exhibitions have presented Macao’s historical renditions, told the stories of the peoples from many countries and regions, and recorded their exchange and life under various cultural background.
“Assemblage of Treasures –– Exhibition of the Macao Museum Collection for Celebration of the 20th Anniversary”belongs to the series of events that are currently cerebrating our 20th anniversary. For this exhibition, we selected from our collections more than eighty items/sets of exhibitory value and historical significance. The exhibitory area has six sections –– “Lingnan Paintings”, “European Traveller’s Paintings”, “Style and Life”, “The Multicultural Macao”, “Exhibition Overview” and “Education Space”. This exhibition introduces the cultural exchange between East and West over four hundred years, on the one hand inheriting Chinese cultural tradition, and on the other enjoying the advantageous arrivals of Westerners’ expeditions. Witnesses can be found in Chinese and Western paintings, quotidian items, and legacies of the greats, such as of Gao Jianfu, George Chinnery and André Auguste Borget, who had sojourned in and built a special bond to Macao. All these showcase Macao’s cultural glamour.
