Zheng Jingkang is the fourth son of Zheng Guanying, the thinker and author of “Words of Warning in Times of Prosperity”. He was also the first generation professional photographer in New China. With the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War, Zheng Jingkang returned to the Mainland to join the nation in saving literary and propaganda work in order to fight the Japanese invasion. Through Zhou Enlai, Zheng Jingkang went to Yan’an in 1940 and in the following years recorded numerous photographs and portraits featuring revolutionary activities related to leaders of the Chinese Communist Party of the Central Government, a range of precious images and information pertaining to the revolutionary history of contemporary China have been attributed to Zheng Jingkang and subsequently handed down. The photo titled ‘Founding Ceremony’ was presented in 1949 and the portrait of Mao Zedong currently hanging on the Tian’anmen rostrum was painted based on an enlargement of photos taken by Zheng Jingkang. In displaying 141 photographs taken in various periods plus 34 antiquities and photographs of Zheng Jingkang, related documentary films and oral history, this exhibition unveils to audiences scenes of the ‘Red Years’.
